Construction|Performance|Residency - Australia|Tap Seac Square, Macau - 2007
This literally giant book is part sculpture, part performance/exhibition space and part community development project. My role as technical director and resident media artist was to not only design and implement all sound, light, projection and interactive components involved in the project but also to continuously create content for them – including a virtual story book in Chinese, Portuguese and English, multiple live recordings and spatialized soundscapes, architectural projections utilizing heritage documents and plans, and video projections for special performances.
During the construction phase of the project I designed and installed the internal and external lighting, electrical systems, LCD and projection screens, as well as other general construction. For the residency in Macau I designed and implemented an outdoor lighting, sound and projection rig which not only provided audio/visuals for the Book and associated performances, but was designed to transform the entirety of Tap Seac Square. Featuring 6 projectors, 12 speakers and more than 80 theatre lights this system provided us with the ability to vary the mood, intensities and contexts for a broad spectrum of performances. As part of my residency I also created stand-alone architectural and performance projections, featuring live camera, remote streaming and video sourced from around Macau and heritage documents, with accompanying soundscapes and live music performances inspired by the cultural mash-up occurring all around us. This 3 month cross-cultural experience truly provided an opportunity to experiment with light, sound and interactivity on a grand scale. For more information, images and video visit Well Theatre.
